"The River of Rigamarole Runs Through"

The River of Rigamarole Runs Through this building. And so does a pier. Inspired by Gordon Matta Clark's "Day's End" at Pier 52, which he described as an "industrial hangar" and a "sun-and-water temple," this project confronts a desire to name water as either natural or systemized, lucid or murky. Staged interactions with water, for example the hidden plumbing wall between the bathroom and kitchen, makes evident how architecture further enforces these illusory categories. As an alternative to bifurcating, this project considers the formal possibilities within nesting—what happens when assumed distinctions are turned inside out, made visible, and disrupted?
