3D Printing Architecture

This course delves into the transformative potential of computational design, additive manufacturing (3D printing), and robotic construction in reshaping our approach to conceptualizing, designing, and building structures. 3D printing enables customization of parts and intricate structures, integration of functionality into designs, creation of precise systems requiring less material, utilization of a wider range of materials compared to traditional methods, and production of composite, durable, and energy-efficient building components. It presents an array of benefits, including waste free and cost-effective construction methods with minimal material consumption and production of parts with higher performances, thereby offering sustainability, efficiency, and waste reduction.

Students engage in innovative exploration of new building elements, design approaches, and robotic 3D printing methods harnessing the potential of 3D printing for architecture. Working in groups, they explore various topics such as:

- Enabling lightweight spaceframe structures via bespoke 3D printed joints and off-the-shelf rods. - Innovating with 3D printing, using wood and fibers for lightweight, eco-friendly components or formwork. - Pioneering non-planar toolpath algorithms for complex topologies. - Investigating diverse 3D printing applications for facades, including clay, ceramic, concrete, and plastic. - Developing compression-only structures with 3D printed plastic formwork for lightweight concrete slabs. - Exploring 3D printing's collaboration with drones/UAVs for assembly.
