“Between the Lines”

Nature is only accessible to the able-bodied. Many designers, too, see accessibility as a roadblock, barely meeting ADA requirements and forcing ramps through winding side entrances. This project, situated south of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, is an attempt at the equity of experience. Containing no stairs or shortcuts, it weaves in and out of the landscape with two parallel surfaces: a promenade with constant grades of 0% and 3.5%, and a canopy to shelter from Michigan weather. The form, derived from points of interest, breathes as it moves. It contains areas of interaction, contemplation, rest, or play based on the five senses, allowing those with sensory disabilities to experience nature by heightening their other senses.
