STUDIO THEME

“Dwellings, Deliberations and other Deviations”

Detroit experiences an unparalleled housing demand, creating opportunities to develop new residential models for an increasingly diverse population.

Simultaneously, the city’s fabric is in need for redensification. Many underutilized urban spaces have the potential to be transformed to be beneficial for residents, the economy, and the environment.

This studio takes advantage of and participates in the initiative DTE Energy is envisioning for the Second Avenue Greenway, connecting the DTE Headquarters with the Detroit River Walk and the Joe Louis Greenway around the city. Along it's path, student teams contribute to a unique district with a synergistic approach to sensitively planned urban spaces and inspiring landscape solutions.

Forward-looking and sensitive housing solutions can take an important role to meet the demand for an affordable, resilient, and life-affirming environment. To understand the role of housing, each team investigated urban concepts and deliverd inspiring approaches to the urban context with emphasis of housing along the Greenway and between Downtown Detroit and the historic Corktown neighborhood.

Furthermore, this studio explored and applied emerging and appropriate construction types and methods, and integrated technological advancements in building systems.
