STUDIO THEME
“Why Go Out?”
In a world of hd tvs, streaming platforms, VR headsets and home entertainment, why go out to the cinema? At a time when many of us are walking around with media devices in hand, what is the entertainment value offered by the big screen that other modes of moving picture delivery cannot quite match? What makes it worth it?
This studio section will focus on the experience of going to the movies – tracing movement of arrival and departure; creating public spectacle and neighborhood presence; interfacing with the street in daylight, dusk, and evening hours; considering individual selections of movies to be seen and snacks to be had; spending time together, in a shared place, as a collective experience.
We will play with tools and formats of both architecture and filmmaking production, including storyboards & sequencing; viewmasters & framing techniques; scenography, dioramas, models & maquettes; posters & 3 minute trailers.
Megaplex. What can architecture bring to the experience? In a world of image & media saturation, what role does architectural design play? As scenographic backdrop, illusory encounters, and magical scene-setting? Or is there more? What do we build in the material, tactile world to keep us grounded in reality?
